Simple, Strong Security in Tourism
Thousands of companies and millions of end-users use a YubiKey to simplify and secure logins to computers, internet services, and mobile apps. Our customers include 9 of the top 10 internet companies, 3 of the 5 leading financial and retails companies, and several of the largest governmental entities around the world. So what can a YubiKey do for tourism?
Clients’ sensitive information is shared online, and this means it could all end up in the wrong hands.
Whether you are a small travel agent working from home or a Managing Director of a big DMC, whether you deal with inbound or outbound FIT’s or group travel, people in tourism spend most of their time online. COVID did not only decimate international tourism in South Africa but also changed the dynamics around the workplace – a lot of people who worked in an office pre-COVID are now all working from home, which means they are often using unsafe (home) internet connections to connect with their clients or link with their company’s networks.
“In recent times, tourism and travel companies have increasingly come on the radar of hackers and cybercriminals who are out to exploit vulnerabilities associated with data security. Data breaches have become a common thing nowadays in the tourism and travel industry. In one instance, British Airways suffered a major cybersecurity breach when hackers entered their systems and managed to steal personal details and financial data associated with more than 380,000 cards. It is assumed that hackers scraped security codes associated with card payments using a cybersecurity flaw during payment authorization. In another instance, Thomas Cook, one of the world’s largest tour and travel operators, also wasn’t immune to data protection and cybersecurity issues. A security researcher found that one of the company’s subsidiaries was not adopting serious measures to protect private data related to a customer’s travel details such as departure and return details, email addresses and names.
Why are hackers targeting businesses in the travel and tourism industry?
Hospitality groups, tour companies, airlines and car rental service agencies possess a large amount of customer data which can be quite useful for cybercriminals in the long run. They try to identify vulnerabilities and openings in the systems of travel companies. And since most travel companies rely on online platforms and booking portals for business expansion, this makes the private data vulnerable to breaches on networks with low security protocols and rules in place.
In fact, the whole ecosystem of dependence on third-party vendors makes it easier for the hackers to get hold of sensitive data.”
